History
Harvey was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on August 17, 1938. He lived
in several Louisiana cities and towns during his formative years, including
Maplewood, Lake Charles, Lake Arthur, and Houma. He was educated in the
Louisiana public schools system and attended Louisiana State University,
where he received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering (1961), the
M.S. degree in Mathematics (1963), and the Ph.D. degree in Mathematics
(1966). Harvey served on the Mathematics faculty at the University of
Tennessee, Knoxville, from 1966 through 1997, where he directed the doctoral
dissertations of six graduate students, published scholarly articles and
books, and developed and directed the Individualized Retirement Financial
Planning Project. He retired early in 1997 to begin a new phase of his
life in Oregon.
Avocation
Both Harvey and Kayla are avid alpine (downhill) skiers, having taken
up the sport late in life (Harvey was 48). Among our favorite things have
always been spur-of-the moment ski trips to various ski resorts following
prodigious dumps of fresh snow. However, beginning in 2006 they have made
skiing more a part of their lives by spending the months of February and
March working remotely from Salt Lake City, Utah, and skiing every day
that five or more inches of fresh snow fall at Alta Ski Resort.
